Source Separation of Household Waste in Berat Municipality (05/2021- ongoing)
Brooks Hannas & Partners, on behalf of the consortium with Urban Research Institute, signed the contract with Swedish Embassy in Tirana – “Source Separation of Household Waste in Berat Municipality” on May 1, 2021. Planned implementation period of the project is 30 months.
The purpose of this project is:
- to provide technical assistance to Ministry of Tourism and Environment to develop a national methodology on household waste separation adaptable for the country;
- to provide technical assistance to Municipality of Berat to increase their capability to effective implementation of household waste separation in Berat town;
The overall objective of the Source Separation of Household Waste in Berat Municipality, Albania project is to provide the Albanian national and local authorities responsible for waste management with a model for introduction of household waste separation schemes. This model (or ‘guidance’) is to act as the basis for national investment planning and achieving EU targets. The scheme includes plans for recyclable and residual waste, and infrastructure for collection, transport and secondary sorting for sale.
Brooks Hannas Consortium already delivered the Model, investment plan, delivered works and supply procurements and is now managing the capacity building, communications campaign and start of separate collection services locally.
10th December 2024- Household Waste Separation in Berat has started!
The City of Berat introduced a waste separation and collection system. This project, funded by Sweden and implemented by Brooks Hannas & Partners and URBAN RESEARCH INSTITUTE consortium, has modernised the City’s waste management and environmental standards. It all starts with technical support to reform the public services.
Berat waste reform is taking place in the context of a nationwide drive to deliver EU standards to Albania citizens led by the Ministry of Tourism and Environment.
Key Investments:
Total Budget: SEK 15 million, with over SEK 7.5 million dedicated to infrastructure.
Infrastructure Highlights:
• Waste Sorting Center
• Collection vehicles making it clear that separated waste goes for recycling.
• Equipment to add value to the material like a press.
• 200 blue containers for apartment blocks, schools, and businesses.
• 280 green bins for mixed waste and 1,200 individual bins for houses.
• 100,000 bags for historical areas made with recycled material.
Communication & Awareness:
A multi-media campaign, launched alongside the event, leveraging social media, outdoor advertising, and volunteer-led door-to-door engagements to raise public awareness and encourage waste separation practices.
The event was led by the Mayor of Berat and the Swedish Ambassador, underscoring the importance of collaboration and commitment to sustainable development.
Together with Berat City Green, consortium of Brooks Hannas & Partners and the Urban Research Institute, we are setting the foundation for a greener, cleaner Berat—and a more EU-aligned Albania as a whole.
